Mechanisms of injury
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is one of the four ligaments important to the stability of the knee joint. Although the PCL is very strong, a powerful force can rupture or tear it. PCL tears are most commonly seen among individuals who play sports, especially football. The most common mechanism of injury of the PCL is known as the “dashboard injury”. This occurs when the knee is bent and an object forcefully hits the tibia backwards, causing the tibia to be pushed back and the PCL to tear. Hyperflexion of the knee (which can happen if you land awkwardly after jumping) can also cause the PCL to tear.
