Plantar Fascitis

Description:  The plantar fascia is a long fibrous tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, acting like a shock absorbing “bowstring” while supporting the arch of the foot.
Plantar Fascitis occurs when there are little micro tears in this tissue causing pain and inflammation.  As a result of pain and inflammation you may experience:

  • Stabbing/burning heel pain
  • Worse in the morning
  • Pain decreases throughout the day
  • After you are finished exercising
  • Mild swelling in the heel

Risk Factors:

  • Middle age or older
  • Overweight
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnant
  • Being on your feet a lot
  • Flat feet, or high arch

Mechanism of Injury:

  • Physical activity increase or overload
  • Improper shoe wear: not consisting of enough arch support and/or shock absorption

Don’t let an injury keep you on the bench. Schedule your Geisinger Sports Medicine appointment today.
