Shin Splints

Description:  shin splints are usually characterized by pain, tenderness, and soreness along the shinbone, which may or may not be accompanied by mild swelling.

  • Shin splints is more of a description than an actual injury, as shin splints is used to describe many related issues such as stress fractures, compartment syndrome, tendonitis, periostitis, etc.

  • Shin splints are most common in runners, however can occur in any athlete involved in a sport in which the legs must absorb shock.

Mechanism of Injury:  impact forces of exercise on the lower extremities from any of, or combination of, the following:

  • Excess Training
  • Inadequate Recovery
  • Worn-out shoes
  • In-adequate surface (concrete should be avoided)

Don’t let an injury keep you on the bench. Schedule your Geisinger Sports Medicine appointment today.
